Dolphin Swim Experience Curaçao

When my family came over from the Netherlands a few years ago, one of the absolute highlights was booking a dolphin swim experience on Curaçao. Living on the island, I’d already heard countless stories about Dolphin Academy, but seeing my family’s faces light up as they got in the water was something else. And of course, there’s always that one family member who does exactly what they’re told not to do… (Looking at you, Dad).

So, if you’re considering this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, here’s everything you need to know before booking — sprinkled with my own experience and a few laughs along the way.

Where to swim with dolphins on Curaçao?

You can swim with dolphins at Dolphin Academy Curaçao, located at the Curaçao Sea Aquarium.

This is the island’s only official dolphin swim facility, and it’s known for its professional trainers and focus on animal care. The setting is natural-looking lagoons rather than a sterile pool, which makes the whole experience feel more authentic. The tours and packages are available directly through Dolphin Academy.

What to expect during a dolphin swim?

Expect a briefing, clear do’s and don’ts, and then an unforgettable time in the water.

Before getting into the water, our group had a detailed briefing: what to do, what not to do, and how to respect the dolphins. For example, no hands on their face or blowhole. Easy, right? Unless you’re my dad — who went for exactly that move within minutes. Luckily, the dolphins didn’t hold a grudge.

Once in the lagoon, we took turns doing set “tricks” with the dolphins — from giving signals to being pushed through the water in a sprint. That last part was by far my favorite. It’s a surreal feeling when a dolphin suddenly boosts you forward like you’re weightless. And yes, there’s a photographer capturing it all. Let’s just say the sprint made for some epic, not-so-flattering pictures that we still laugh about today.

Dolphin Swim Experience Curaçao

Prices for swimming with dolphins on Curaçao

Prices vary depending on the program, but generally expect to pay between $100–$200 per person.

The “swim” experience is usually more expensive than a simple “encounter,” since it includes more water time and activities. Photos and videos are typically sold separately — in our case, we got them on a USB stick (yes, this was a few years ago, so very retro). Today, you’ll often have the option to purchase digital downloads. While it adds to the cost, trust me: you’ll want the proof of your dolphin sprint face.

Age & health requirements for dolphin swims

Children must usually be at least 8 years old and comfortable swimmers, and there are health restrictions.

If you’re traveling with younger kids, there’s a separate “encounter” program where they can interact with the dolphins in shallow water. Pregnant women and people with certain medical conditions might not be allowed to join the swim for safety reasons. Always check the specific requirements when you book, so you don’t face surprises at the entrance.

What should you bring with you?

Make sure to pack swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and water shoes if you prefer a bit of grip on the lagoon floor. Life vests are always available for anyone who wants them, so you don’t need to bring your own. And don’t forget dry clothes for after the swim — plus a little extra cash or card if you want to buy the professional photos or souvenirs afterward.

What’s the difference between a Swim and an Encounter?

A “swim” means active interaction in deeper water, while an “encounter” is a gentler, shallow-water experience.

During the dolphin swim, you’ll be in waist-to-chest deep water (or deeper), swimming alongside the dolphins and even doing tricks with them. It’s dynamic, energetic, and a bit of a workout. The encounter, on the other hand, is perfect for smaller kids, cautious adults, or anyone who just wants to meet the dolphins without going full Michael Phelps.

Is swimming with dolphins on Curaçao ethical?

Yes, as long as you choose a certified facility like Dolphin Academy, which prioritizes animal care and enrichment.

This is always a tricky question. I’ll be honest: I went into it a little skeptical. But Dolphin Academy emphasizes education and respect for the animals. The dolphins live in large, natural seawater lagoons and are not forced into activities. Instead, the training is based on positive reinforcement. While it’s not the same as spotting dolphins in the wild, it is a well-regulated and animal-conscious experience compared to many facilities worldwide.

Booking a Dolphin Experience online

You can book directly through the Dolphin Academy website.

Booking online is usually the easiest, especially if you’re visiting Curaçao on a cruise or during high season. It guarantees your spot, gives you clear time slots, and often includes package deals for photos or extra activities at the Sea Aquarium. If you’re like me and prefer planning ahead (so you don’t miss out), I’d definitely recommend reserving online rather than waiting until the last minute.

Final thoughts

Looking back, our dolphin swim experience on Curaçao is still one of the most memorable things I’ve done with my family here. From my dad’s rule-breaking moment to the hilarious sprint photos, it was equal parts magical and comical.

If you’re considering it, I’d say go for it. I had a fantastic time — and if you want to plan your own dolphin adventure, you can check out the booking options.
